To start out we are researching on famous generals and soliders of the Civil War. If you don't know what a General or Soldiers are then I'll tell you. A General is the head or leader of a troop. A soldier is a person who serves in the military to fight or has a spot but not to fight. Did you know that some people who had slaves would force the slaves to join the military or they would sign their selves up for the military but put their slaves in their place.
Robert Smalls was a slave and was forced to be in the Confederacy army which is against the Union. If you don't know who was the North or South, then here it is, Union was the North and the Confederacy was the South. On May12, 1862 Robert Smalls escaped from the confederacy. How he did it you ask? Well, he put on a captain's uniform and acted like the captain. He carefully guided the steamboat called the Planter out of Charleston Harbor. He safely made his way off the Confederate lands and made his way over to a union ship and offered them his steamboat. He later became a U.S. Congress Men.
During that time African American slaves or people could not join the Union Military. On July 17, 1862 the congress said that they could enlist (which means sign up or enroll) to the Union army. Later on June 15,1864 congress allowed equal pay for African American soldiers.How cool, everything changed since then.

General Bragg was one of the eight men that ranked full general on the Confederate army. He must have been a good general out of all the people who were in the army.I will give you one of his Confederate war missions are Louisiana Militia During the early 1861. He was a very strong General.
General Robert Edward Lee is next. Robert is actually our teachers great great great uncle. How cool. Lee was the Confederate General but at some point was against slavery.He was in charge of supervising all southern forces in Virginia. He died on Oct. 12,1870.
